More than 90 percent of the population is below the poverty line … the hunger crisis is worsening in Syria

United Nations relief agencies warned on Friday that Syrians inside their countries are facing an unprecedented food crisis, as more than 9.3 million people lack sufficient food, at a time when the country’s spread of Corona virus may accelerate.
According to Reuters reported by the World Food Program, the number of people lacking basic food items has increased by 1.4 million in the past six months.
WFP spokeswoman Elizabeth Byers said food prices had risen more than 200 percent in less than one year due to the economic meltdown in neighboring Lebanon, and the actions of the Assad regime’s government with regard to fighting Corona.
In her turn, Akmal Majtimova, WHO representative in Syria, confirmed that more than 90 percent of the Syrian population lives below the poverty line of $ 2 a day while the humanitarian needs increase.
She added that less than half of the public hospitals in Syria are operating, while half of the medical workers have fled since the start of the war, and the rest face a “permanent threat of kidnapping and killing.”
